I‘ll start with what’s most important.
Dr. Hwang, thank you, you have made our lives better – you are a lifesaver.
You can’t get a doctor that’s more understanding and caring.
You have made me cry with your gentleness and empathy and we will forever be grateful. You have the best staff, the most state of the art equipment, the best of everything, but most importantly, it’s YOU that makes this clinic special.
All the euphemism you hear in a testimonial applies here.
There just aren’t words.
And this is where my testimonial starts, to be honest, I’ve always kind of detested testimonial for their lack of originality and for their banality, but sitting here writing my thanks, I finally understand why they all sound the same and use the same cliches. Because when your feelings are just that heartfelt – you lose words, there aren’t words that aptly expresses your feelings and thoughts. So, your brain pounds out these words you normally wouldn’t think of using, but end up using, because it’s the only words are befitting.
So, thank you Dr. Hwang.
As inarticulate as that word seems it’s the only ones that are appropriate.
But, to help you understand why my thanks is so heartfelt, I feel I have to share my story.
To start, I am not the person diagnosed with hearing loss, at least not yet. But, I have loved ones who are suffering from hearing loss.
There is nothing more conducive to misunderstanding than miscommunication.
And when there is a lack of communication with a loved one, the loss is much more devastating. With hearing loss everything verbally communicated can be misunderstood.
The most destructive aspect of hearing loss is the emotional chasm that occurs with the layers of misunderstandings that accumulate within the relationship from these misunderstanding. Even though you know intellectually that these incidents aren’t intentional, emotionally the repetitive nature of these incidents leads to unspoken frustration and even a need to discount feelings; a want to avoid encounters which can lead to misunderstandings.
Unlike other illnesses, where the symptoms are rapid and many times apparent to the eye, hearing loss especially in people who are young is much less recognizable and much more misleading. It looks a lot like absentmindedness, ADHD, lack of interest, or even depression – no one suspects hearing loss at first. In fact, the NHS (National Health Service) states that hearing loss is one of the most undertreated ailments and advises getting a checkup yearly. And this had partly to do with the assumption at hearing loss is inevitable with old age.
When my mother was first diagnosed with hearing loss, she was in her forties. Younger than how old I am now. But, even after the diagnosis the understanding came much more slowly. She didn’t like talking on the phone, and when it was unavoidable, there were usually mistakes and misunderstandings. For example, I would ask her to pick me up at four and she wouldn’t get there till five. I would end up waiting an extra hour and be mad at her but she would be even more upset. This was the time before cell phones (also before I had my own transportation) and there was no way to get in contact with her while I was waiting. In fact, all these little situations where there is verbal communication (which is virtually all the time) it was slowly eating way at their self-esteem and self-confidence; making them feel more introverted and isolated.
After her diagnosis, though, I think it might have even been worse for her. Everyone was overreacting, talking more loudly, gesturing more wildly, and asking “do you understand” like they have suddenly lost their intelligence. Now, there are hearing aids that are small and some devices aren’t even noticeable, and it’s much more accepted. “Back in those days”, hearing aids weren’t as developed and there was less acceptance. You were made to feel strange, like you had a deformity. It wasn’t until I got older that I began to understand a little bit of how frustrating and self-deprecating the effects of hearing loss can be.
Although it much only be a fraction of the frustration they must have felt.
When I first went to get a hearing aid for my sibling, it was with great apprehension. I think we were both scared and emotionally unprepared, but we were willing to give it a try; we weren’t willing to invest everything emotionally, but we were seeking help. It started with a simple appointment and a hearing test. It wasn’t evasive or as scary as we expected, although we were apprehensive about the results. We knew there was a problem and, in our family, if there is a problem, you fixed it. Then we meet with the doctor, Dr. Hwang. First impression, calm. Second impression, capable. Third impression, trustworthy. As expected, there was nerve damage and without proper care it can get worse. There was expected waterworks, but unexpectedly, none, maybe because she made things seem so comforting and normal. She consulted us on the hearing aids most comparable to the symptoms then did an initial fitting. We came back two weeks later and did a two-week trial. She made adjustments and minor changes to fit our lifestyle and then two more weeks for adjustment. When it didn’t feel right after the second week, she even advised us to try a different model for free. It was just so reassuring and to be honest, we felt cared for. I wish we had come here sooner. After trying the other model we were able to make a much more informed decision. And a month later when we went back to the doctor, we felt the changes in our lives and that’s when the waterworks finally occurred. I cried. I was thankful. I am grateful.
So, thank you Dr. Hwang.
